You are your mitochondria

These little bacteria affect your body way more than you think! They are autonomous in terms of their goals as a bacteria, and part of who you are.

Mitochondria  are ancient bacteria, there are more of them than cells in your body. They are so essential to your functioning, that if they all would stop working for 6 seconds, you would die. Mitochondria generate most of the cell’s supply of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), used as a source of chemical energy. A mitochondrion was thus termed the powerhouseof the cell.

These little bacteria affect your body way more than you think! They are autonomous in terms of their goals as a bacteria, and part of who you are. I know, it might sound crazy that minuscule bacteria play such a big role.. But read this.

They are focused on:

  • Run away or hide from scary things (cause of shame, procrastination);
  • Prevent starvation;
  • Ensure reproduction.

There are quite some strong similarities between the things that mitochondria focus on, and the instinctive things inherent to who we are as a species. Something that is so abundant in your own body, and shows similarities this strong with our instincts, is something to be aware of. Whether it is factually true, I don’t really know yet.

I find it very plausible, and will happily integrate it in my value judgements of my own actions and reflections.

Dave Asprey goes into mitochondria more.
